Finding a natural deodorant that works should not mean choosing between reliable odor protection and comfortable skin. Yet many formulas cause irritation, stop working by lunchtime, or leave white marks and waxy buildup on clothes.
I knew this cycle personally. I also heard it from customers who were tired of discreetly checking themselves throughout the day, carrying deodorant in case they needed to reapply, and worrying that stress would overpower their protection.
Cloud grew from those experiences. It took more than four years, over 100 ingredients, and many failed batches to create. The result is a different approach to natural deodorant, built around the underarm microbiome, skin pH, several odor-control strategies, and a texture that feels comfortable every day.
Why I Needed a Natural Deodorant That Works Differently
My reason for creating Cloud was personal. During cancer treatment, my skin became extremely sensitive. Products containing baking soda were no longer comfortable for me. I needed a sensitive skin deodorant that lasted all day, had a light scent, and felt good on my skin.
I also wanted a non-staining deodorant that wouldn’t leave white marks on my dark clothes. Waxy buildup was another problem. Thick deodorant residue could collect on all kids of clothing, including sweaters, and dress jackets. It was difficult to remove and could hold on to body oils and odor even after washing.
Cloud needed to:
- Provide reliable odor protection from morning to night
- Feel gentle on sensitive underarm skin
- Dry quickly and clear
- Leave no waxy buildup or white residue on clothing
- Use a light scent instead of masking odor with heavy fragrance
Why Many Natural Deodorants Feel Similar
Different brands can use similar formula foundations. Many non-aluminum sticks and creams begin with waxes, oils, or butters, combined with starches or clays. Baking soda or magnesium hydroxide is added for odor control, and fragrance provides the scent.
That approach can work for some people, but it did not solve the problems I kept seeing. Some customers developed irritation over time. Others lost protection halfway through the day. Waxes and powders could also leave residue on skin and clothing. Trying several brands does not always mean trying several truly different formulas.
What Actually Causes Underarm Odor?
Fresh sweat is not the main source of underarm odor. Our skin is home to a community of microorganisms called the skin microbiome. Many are harmless and do not create odor.
Odor develops when certain bacteria break down compounds in sweat and skin secretions. That changed my question as a formulator. Instead of asking how to cover odor, I began asking how to address odor-causing bacteria while respecting the rest of the microbiome.
The goal is not to remove every microorganism. It is to make it harder for odor-causing bacteria to dominate while supporting a balanced skin environment. That is the idea behind a microbiome deodorant.
Why Skin pH Matters
Skin is naturally mildly acidic. Its surface has a thin protective film called the acid mantle, which helps support the skin barrier. Research on skin-surface pH connects this mildly acidic environment with healthy barrier function.
The underarm also deals with shaving, friction, warmth, and moisture, so a harsh formula can feel especially uncomfortable there. Baking soda is alkaline. With repeated use, it can disrupt the skin’s acidic environment and weaken the skin barrier. Over time, this may lead to dryness, itching, redness, or an armpit rash.
That is why I formulated Cloud without baking soda. Cloud is an aluminum-free deodorant that works with the skin’s naturally acidic environment while providing reliable odor protection.
Why Cloud Uses More Than One Odor-Control Strategy
Because the underarm microbiome varies from person to person and can change over time, I did not want Cloud to rely on a single odor-control strategy. I formulated it with several complementary modes of action to provide more reliable odor protection.
Plant-Based Antimicrobials Target Odor-Causing Bacteria
Cloud uses a blend of plant-based antimicrobials to target odor-causing bacteria before odor starts. It approaches odor in more than one way instead of relying on fragrance to hide it after it forms. Cloud’s scents are intentionally light. The formula does the work.
Probiotics Support Balance
Probiotics complement the antimicrobial blend by supporting a balanced skin environment. For me, odor control starts with balance, so odor-causing bacteria have less opportunity to take over.
Why Texture Matters
Cloud has a lightweight, silky texture that spreads easily, dries quickly, and becomes clear on the skin. Its wax-free formula does not leave the thick coating I experienced with many traditional sticks. A thin layer is enough, so there is no need to drag a hard stick over delicate skin or wait several minutes before getting dressed.
Customers often tell me they appreciate the lack of greasiness, white marks, and visible residue as much as the odor protection itself.
More Than Four Years of Trial and Error
I evaluated more than 100 ingredients and made many batches that did not work. Some versions became less reliable over time. Others worked for one group of testers but caused discomfort for someone else. Every version had to be made, tested, observed, and adjusted.
I almost gave up. I kept going because the standard was not simply “natural.” I was creating a natural deodorant that works for people already disappointed by natural deodorant.
Today, I still make Cloud in small batches with my KitchenAid mixer. I fill and label every tube by hand.
What “Works” Looks Like in Real Life
One customer is a nurse in a fast-paced environment. She says Cloud keeps her odor-free even in stressful situations. Another wore it through a hot, humid week in Bangkok. Others have tested it while playing tennis, exercising, or wearing dark clothing or synthetic fabrics like polyester. They stayed protected without the visible residue they had experienced with other deodorants.
These stories reflect what customers want: to apply deodorant in the morning and trust it through work, stress, heat, exercise, hormonal changes, and everything else the day brings.
Cloud Is for People Who Are Done Experimenting
If natural deodorants have caused irritation, stopped working, or left marks on your clothes, you may simply have tried several versions of a similar formula.
Cloud offers another approach: a baking soda free deodorant made with plant-based antimicrobials, probiotics, and a silky texture. It was created as a gentle natural deodorant for sensitive skin without asking you to choose gentleness over performance.
That is what makes Cloud different. It addresses the source of odor, respects the skin’s natural balance, and feels comfortable to wear. If you are ready to stop experimenting, explore Cloud’s full-size natural deodorants.
